Audio is on the Rise
Security Business revealed that nearly 20% of integrators added audio detection to their service offerings in 2019, with rising demand from commercial, residential, and government sectors for comprehensive security solutions.
But audio isn’t a security fad. These audio monitoring solutions have continued to gain popularity as powerful evidence recorders that capture vital information beyond the camera lens.
Advantages of Adding Audio
Aside from heightened evidence capture, audio surveillance systems bolster security in another impactful way.
False alarms are a critical concern in security management. An audio device gives respondents the opportunity to analyze key information and avoid unnecessary police dispatch. With 98% of all alarm events being false, audio information analysis can save heaps of time, money, and energy for first responders and end users alike.
Applications of Audio Devices
There’s an outstanding variety of use cases surrounding audio monitoring in vertical markets, making it a flexible solution that delivers added security into a wide range of environments.
Some of the major markets that benefit from audio include:
- Education
- Healthcare
- Transportation
- Retail
- Law Enforcement
- Industrial Facilities
Is Audio Recording Allowed?
To clear up confusion surrounding audio monitoring regulations, we’re here to share that it’s acceptable to use audio monitoring in places that have no expectation of privacy. This is supported by the U.S. Law Title 18, Chapter 119, Section 2511(2)(iii)(d). A key way to remove the expectation of privacy is to install signage that says “Audio Monitoring on this Premises.”
Approaching Audio Strategically
When adding audio to an existing security solution, either a camera’s built-in microphone can be used to record audio, or the camera can be integrated with an external microphone.
However, installing an external microphone is optimal for sound clarity, pickup and installation flexibility. Keep in mind, selecting the right audio setup is fully dependent on your unique security application.
Here are some important steps to take when considering an audio device:
- Define Your Audio Needs
- Determine Line Level or Mic Level
- Consider Microphone Location
- Select the Right Form & Features
- Define Power & Audio Playback Source
- Plan Audio Configuration
